Reading
comprehension is the act of understanding what you are reading. While the
definition can be simply stated the act is not simple to teach, learn or
practice. Reading comprehension is an intentional, active, interactive process
that occurs before, during and after a person reads a particular piece of
writing.
Strategies
for reading comprehension
- Identify the purpose in reading.
- Use graphemic rules and patterns to aid in bottom-up decoding.
- Use efficient silent reading techniques for relatively rapid comprehension
- Skim the text for main ideas.
- Scan the text for specific information.
- Use semantic mapping or clustering
- Guess when you aren’t certain
- Analize vocabulary
- Distinguish between literal and implied meanings
- Capitalize on discourse markers to process relationships
